"Adventures of Rupert the Gummibear" Paintings 2005

Here’s a series of fabric paintings that narrate the story of my good friend “Rupert the Gummibear.”

Okay, back to Rupert and his incredible adventures:

Rupert the Gummibear finds himself almost being eaten alive by a little girl named Mia. They become good friends, of course, and Mia helps Rupert figure out where his true home is.

The lines in these works were sewn in red thread on cotton fabric. I was able to create a surface in relief by adding stuffing and sewing on small pieces of fabric throughout. I then colored in the images with paint or by adhering colored tissue paper.
There once was a little girl named MIA who absolutely loved to eat gummibears…
until the day she met RUPERT. “Please don’t eat me!” cries Rupert.
(at the amusement park) On that day her tasty treat turned into a little friend.

MIA thought to herself: this Rupert is an odd little fellow…
I can always eat him later if I get hungry. “Where do I come from?” asks Rupert.
(at the zoo) “He’s way more furry than you!” says Mia.

By now they were such good friends that MIA would do anything to help her little RUPERT. “And if I want to see the whole wide world?” asks Rupert.

This wall sculpture has a mechanism that allows you to lift the hand holding little Rupert the Gummibear.
As you pull on the ball, the mouth opens and up up up goes Rupert.
